The South Plains men’s and women’s cross country teams recently got the season off to a great start with two strong showings.
The South Plains College men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the Texas Tech Invitational on Sept. 8.
The SPC men’s team ran away with the event by placing four runners in the top 10 finishers. The SPC men finished with 29 points, 32 less than second place.
The top two runners for the men’s team finished in second and third overall. Freshman Felix Kosgei finished with a time of 26:46, and sophomore Omero Rodriquez finished with a time of 27:11.
Sophomore Jose Silva and sophomore Nicholas Rotich also placed in the top 10, with Silva finishing in fifth with a time of 27:14 and Rotich finishing in sixth with a time of 27:47.
Sophomore Connor Hughes posted a time of 28:36, which was good enough for 14th place.
The last two runners for SPC were freshmen Leobardo Michel and Kai Rodgers, who finished in 15th and 67th , respectively, with times of 28:47 and 34:34.
The SPC women had a good showing with a fourth-place finish in the overall team standings with 103 points.
The women’s team placed two runners in the top 10. Freshmen Seselia Dala placed first with a time of 22:53, while freshman Leslie Romero placed in seventh with a time of 23:49.
Sophomore Poro Gahekave finished 26th with a time of 25:48, followed by freshman Caitlyn Mercer, who finished 27th with a time of 26:00.
Freshman Jasmine Campos finished 55th with a time of 29:52, while freshman Lydia Mancillas finished 56th with a time of 29:25.
On Sept. 3 the SPC men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the Bill Libby XC invitational, in Abilene, Texas.
The SPC men’s cross country team dominated the meet, placing four runners first through fourth, with two more finishing in the top 10. The team finished first with 19 points, 60 points ahead of the second-place team.
Kosgei placed first with a time of 14:53 in the 5K run, while Silva placed second with a time of 15:09.
Rodriguez placed third with a time of 15:15, and Rotich placed fourth with a time of 15:43.
Michael Benoit and Deric Martinez placed ninth and 10th, respectively, with times of 16:03 and 16:15.
The last two SPC runners were Michel and Robert Downs Jr., who finished in 13th place and 36th, respectively with times of 16:27 and 17:43.
The women’s cross country team also had at great showing at the Bill Libby Invitational, with runners placing in the top two and another runner placing in the top 10.
The women’s team placed first overall with a total of 48 points, 20 points better than the second place-team.
Coming in first in the women’s 5K run was Dala, who posted a time of 18:53.
Romero finished with a time of 19:15, placing second, while Gahekave placed seventh with time of 19:59.
Mercer finished in 15th place with a time of 21:19.
The last two runners for the SPC women were Campos and Mancillas, who finished 32nd and 45th, respectively, with times of 22:49 and 25:04.
