Rodeo team begin spring season with strong performances

The South Plains College men’s and women’s rodeo teams began the spring season by posting top marks at the Odessa College Rodeo.

The Texans placed first in the Rodeo, while the Lady Texans placed second in the competition that was held on Feb. 21-Feb. 23 at the Ector County Coliseum in Odessa.

The Texans accumulated 585 points during the three-day competition, moving them to second in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Southwest Region standings with 1,930 points on the season. Clarendon College sits atop the Southwest Region standings with 2,270 points.

Freshman Hayden Cloward and junior Hadley Cloward placed first overall in the team roping event. The duo posted a time of 5.7 in the long round and followed up with a 5.7 in the finals, accumulating 360 points. Freshman Grady Quam teamed with Cisco College’s Paden Bray to post a 6.0 in the long round and a 15.5 in the finals, adding 100 points for SPC.

In steer wrestling, sophomore Britt Bedke placed second after posting a time of 4.1 in the long round and a 5.1 in the finals, accumulating 125 points. Jesse Kindt placed sixth with a time of 4.5 in the long round but missed the mark in the finals, adding 35 points.

The Lady Texans totaled 295 team points, keeping their third place spot in the NIRA Southwest Region with 1,167.5 points.

Sophomore Delaney Kunau placed second in breakaway roping, posting a time of 2.3 in the long round and a 2.9 in the finals. She ended with 145 points. Freshman Elle Eagles placed second in barrel racing, posting a time of 14.45 in the long round and 14.21 in the finals, totalling 125 points.

In goat tying, sophomore Shaylynee Reymore placed fourth with a time of 6.9 in the long round and a 6.9 in the finals.
