The South Plains College men’s and women’s track and field teams opened up the indoor season with resounding results.

The teams competed in the Sooner Open at Oklahoma University on Jan. 14.

In the men’s 600-yard run, sophomore Okeen Williams placed third in 1:12.04, while freshman Rayan Holmes placed fifth with a time of 1:13:04. Freshman Montel Hood finished sixth with a time of 1:13.26.

In the 1,000-meter run, freshman Felix Kosgei placed third with a time of 2:37.01, while sophomore Omero Rodriguez placed sixth with a time of 2:38.03.

In the mile race, freshman Nicholas Rotich placed fifth with a time of 4:23.94. Sophomore Jose Silva placed seventh with a time of 4:31.31, while sophomore Deric Martinez finished eighth with a time of 4:34.22 and sophomore Connor Hughes finished ninth with a time of 4:42.47.

In the 3,000 meter run, Kosgei placed first with a time of 8:57.82, while Rodriguez placed second with a time of 9:00.68. Silva placed third with a time of 9:02.85, Rotich placed fourth with a time of 9:06.99, and Martinez placed sixth with a time 9:13.07. Hughes finished seventh with a time of 9:29.30, and freshman Leobardo Michel finished eighth with a time of 9:51.48.

In the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Robert Dunning placed first with a time of 7.97, while freshman William Watson placed third with a time of 8.14. Freshman Patrick Johnson finished fifth with a time of 8.77.

In the 4 x 440 relay, Hood, sophomore Okeen Williams, freshman Jordan Atkinson, and Holmes placed first with a time of 3:18.75.

In the high jump, sophmore Kwaume McGee placed second with a jump of 2.06 meters, while freshman Devaughnn Coleman finished eighth with a jump of 1.91 meters.

In the long jump, sophmore Fabian Edoki placed first with a jump of 7.61 meters. Freshman Laquan Nairn placed second with a jump of 7.43 meters, while sophomore Derrick Monroe placed third with a jump of 7.33 meters. Freshman Witt Jonathan finished ninth with a jump of 6.31 meters.

In the triple jump, Nairn placed second with a jump of 15.38 meters, and Edoki placed third with a time of 15.2 meters.

In the shot put, freshman Mclendon Hill placed second with a throw of 13.73 meters. Freshman Jonathan Witt placed third with a throw of 11.96 meters, and freshman Patrick Johnson placed fourth with a throw of 11.15 meters. Sophomore Zach Hancock placed sixth with a throw 10.06 meters.   

In women’s competition, freshman Natasha McDonald placed third in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:25.99. Freshman Agnes Abrocquah placed fourth with a time of 1:27.70, and sophomore Latriceia Smith placed sixth with a time of 1:29.56.

In the 800-meter run, sophomore Poro Gahekave placed second with a time of 2:24.67.

In the 1000-meter run, freshman Seselia Dala placed third with a time of 3:04.29, while freshman Leslie Romero finished ninth with a time of 3:20.84. Freshman Lydia Mancillas finished 12th with a time of 4:13.59.

In the 3000-meter run, Gahekave placed second with a time of 11:07.48, while Romero placed third with a time of 11:12.50, and freshman Caitlyn Mercer placed fourth with a time of 12:02.33.

In the women’s 4 x 440 relay, two teams placed third and fourth. The third-place team consisted of Abrocquah, freshman Safia Bright, freshman Ashley Hughes and freshman Omotayo Abolaji, with a time of 3:57.68 The fourth-place team consisted of freshman Natasha McDonald, sophomore Mauricia Prieto, Smith and sophomore Kadrienne Sanders, with a time of 4:00.43.

In the long jump, sophomore Felicia Frimpong placed second with a jump of 5.65 meters, while sophomore Melody Korie placed third with a jump of 5.56 meters. Freshman Cha’Kaylin Gilbert placed seventh with a jump of 5.15 meters.

In the shot put, sophomore Kionna Bradshaw placed third with a throw of 14.12 meters. Freshman Jannia Price finished ninth with a throw of 11.48 meters.
